It’s time to recognize good driver performance

For all the times a driver made a mistake, how many other times were they flawless?

Unfortunately for most fleets, nobody’s keeping score — until now.

In an environment where many drivers feel no one is on their side, Netradyne has become their biggest advocate, coach and trainer.

FreightTech has reached a point where even driver coaching can be automated.

Nick Grome, Netradyne’s director of sales, joined a recent episode of FreightWaves’ What The Truck?!? to discuss the importance of positive recognition using Driver•i, the advanced AI, fleet camera system that analyzes both good and risky driving behavior, and provides real-time coaching through audible in-cab alerts.

According to Grome, Netradyne’s objective is to empower fleet managers and drivers with data visibility.

“Fleet managers can identify a trend over a time period of the previous week or month to proactively identify the root cause of a behavioral trend and how to get ahead of it before it turns into something bad,” he said.

Fleets are surprised by just how popular Driver•i is with drivers, considering the pushback received from drivers. Using performance data to fuel incentive programs, fleets can use Driver•i to stir up some friendly competition among drivers, like monthly bonus wins.

All fleets desire a positive safety culture. However, far too often a culture of fear is developed (unintentionally), characterized by a lopsided criticism-to-validation ratio. Grome argues this doesn’t have to be the case.

“The data exists today where you can identify what a driver’s doing well and have a balanced conversation versus having them called into the “principal’s office” once a quarter to tell them what they did wrong. And Driver•i is the only solution that offers this capability” Grome said.

As fleets continue to struggle with driver recruitment and retention, providing a well-balanced review of their performance goes a long way in determining whether they’re in it for the long haul.
